Calligraphic approach for generating new Display Type designing concepts:
A workshop by Prof Santosh Kshirsagar

The term 'Display Type' comes to us with many expectations. More specifically in Indian scripts type designing. Some of them are about- big size with legibility plus retaining its good look; big size type with new stylization; and big sized visually expressive yet readable typefaces. All these challenges can't be sorted out in one work shop or by doing few task based assignments. But we may attempt to understand the underlying principle by doing few realisation exercises. And go home with some clarity in doing systematic, productive experimentation in world of letterform designing.

Knowing basic technique of Calligraphy allows us to understand the core character of a letterform quickly. We termed it as Calligraphic understanding of letter structure. This is a very fundamental aspect while pursuing new display type designing concepts particularly in Indian scripts.

In this workshop we will learn basics of Calligraphy technique and then its systematic exploration in order to achieve new visual concepts in Display Type designing. It's alright even if you do not have actual hand work experience, the inquisitiveness and passion about experimentation will work for you. Come prepared with your unconventional calligraphic tools to enjoy this workshop. Ask for triggers of new material, apart from the basic that will be provided by organisers (only after registration).
