Title: 'The process of learning Calligraphy and Stylization'
Abstract: Â Aesthetics and variability in calligraphic or lettering styles is a broaden area to learn and practice. Many calligraphers, Type designers, lettering artists have worked over the letter structure and stylize/ modified them for various utilizations or communications.
The module of this workshop will mainly focus on presentation & interaction (as it’s an online workshop). Making student understand about the nuances of Calligraphy, possibilities and methods for letter stylization, serving them an approach for learning letter stylization by sharing some working outcomes through presentation, will be some respective areas that this module will cover.
Later, by acquiring this approach, Students can practice over letter modification/stylization in order to make them creative / innovative and structurally stronger for various design implementations.
Materials/ tools to be brought by student participants:
Students can carry their own notebook and pen to put down notes.
Material for practice: Black Rotring or Pointed pen, Flat/ angular markers of various nib size, Metal calligraphic tools (Wooden handles with metal tips) and ink.

Faculty, Sophia Polytechnic, Art and Design Department, Mumbai, India
Kalpesh Gosavi is an alumnus of Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, India. Holds his BFA and MFA. Kalpesh specializes in Calligraphy, Lettering and design studies. Experimenting with letterforms, developing stylizations, exploring design possibilities, graphic design, visual literacy, branding, publication design and deriving teaching-working methodologies for the same is something that fascinates him a lot.
Kalpesh has taken several workshops- Lectures, especially on Devnagari calligraphy- Indic lettering in remarkable art- design institutions, private academies and in various schools across India. ‘Sensible stroke’ and ‘upstroke’ are the calligraphy & lettering workshop series that he has been conducting serially form past some years for design and visual communication students & professionals. His work exhibited in various group shows in India and latest in ‘Cheongju jikji world calligraphy exhibition’ at ‘South Korea’. Research presentations: Typography day 2010 at Mumbai, Typography day 2016 at Bangalore and Typography day 2017 at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
