Title: Exploring Personalities of Tools
Abstract: Tools like brushes, chiseled nib marker or pens, have distinct personalities that provide a unique visual form to calligraphy. But these tools can also be used in myriad ways to get unexpected or surprising results. This workshop will introduce participants to various interesting ways of using tools & will enable them to explore letter variations through calligraphy.
Participants will be encouraged to work with analog tools.Through multiple drawing exercises, the participants will experiment with the visual output of the tool and discover it’s various attributes. They will learn to use these attributes to draw letter variations. This process will help the participants to create options while doing lettering, calligraphy and logotypes.
Materials/Tools suggested:
Mandatory Tools : Pen/Pencil, Chiseled marker, Calligraphy pens/ Calligraphy tools/Parallel Pen, Round Brush/Flat Brush, Thick round tip marker.
Surface : Cartridge paper or Executive Bond Paper - A5 size (50 sheets).
Medium : Camel Black Ink or Parker Black Ink, Poster Black opaque watercolor.

Kailash Malviya is type designer based in Mumbai. He graduated from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art in 2018 and joined Ek Type, Mumbai to explore and practice his interest in letterform design. Gotu (Latin script) and Noto Serif Dogra are some of the typefaces he has designed with Ek Type.
